To be fair to Alfie, he doesn't look like he's been bred for shooting, but a bit of canine company is just as important as retrieving birds during long, chilly days in the field. Talk of this year's cancelled Balmoral grouse season reminds me of a little-known tale from a few years back when the Queen gave one poor 'gun' such a ticking-off he was left in a bigger flap than the birds. It all kicked off when property tycoon Ned Ryan went shooting at Her Majesty's Sandringham estate, but found there were so few birds that not a single pheasant flew within range. But after the whistle sounded to mark the end of the shoot, one bird finally flew directly above the flustered Irishman, who was a friend of Princess Margaret. Ned took aim and fired. When he turned around to see where it landed, he found the Queen looking daggers. It must have been very late in the day because she was said to have told him: 'We do not shoot after the whistle... and we do not shoot owls! ' Not long after the dressing-down, Ned passed away – probably from the humiliation of it all.
