Microsoft Symbol Server is a Windows technology used to obtain symbol debugging information. It is built by using the SymSrv technology that is bundled with the Debugging Tools for Windows package. The utility can be used to verify symbols and to build a local symbol cache in a convenient, supposedly non-invasive way. This utility is included with the Debugging Tools for Windows. Click Add new location and specify the following address for it: localhost:33417/. (The port number is configurable on the page of dotPeek options. In the Visual Studio options, go to the Debugging | General page and clear the Enable Just My Code checkbox. Configure dotPeek Symbol Server dotPeek symbol server allows you to choose the exact assemblies for which symbol files should be generated. The correct configuration prevents you from undesired stepping into system assemblies or other assemblies that you are not interested in. Select from the main menu, then choose on the left. Using the radio buttons, choose one of the options under the Generate symbol files () for. The meanings of the first four options are obvious. The last one allows for the most flexibility — after selecting this option, you can select only those assemblies which you need for debugging, and open them in the Assembly Explorer. Optionally, you can change the port number that will be used for dotPeek symbol server.

You do this by configuring Visual Studio to use the Microsoft Symbol Sever. In VS 2005, do the following: Open Visual Studio. Removing Symbols To remove the symbols from the cache, you will need to know the ID of your initial Add transaction. You need to specify the number of the transaction that you want to delete, and the path to your symbol cache on the command line to SymStore, as in the following example. symstore del /i 0000000001 /s d:\Symbols Conclusion You should now have full symbolic information when debugging, including full symbols for whatever operating system you are working on.
