However, my question is, how much does the school's track matter? WNMU only offers 'advanced generalist' -- with a focus on rural community. I spoke to a contact at the school, who said it's applicable to those who don't plan to practice in rural settings. I don't, for the matter, plan to do so. However, I just want to find out if it's worth going for the less expensive and convenient option, or if I should spend the money to attend a school with a mental health or clinical track? To note, my goal is to become a LCSW in California. I'd like to work in a hospital/medical/clinical setting ideally, (edit: but I am also content with heavy administrative work, such as case management). If anyone has any input or advice, that'd be great. Or if you know of/have been a student of this program, please feel free to chime in with how the program was. I've had a difficult time finding student accounts of this online program. I'm also open to suggestions of other online programs, particularly ones with rolling admissions and reasonable tuition costs -- and CSWE accredited.

level 1 I just graduated with my MSW from the Indiana University School of Social Work. I honestly had no idea that some programs were consisted prestigious and never really heard anything about other schools. Very interesting. level 1 As far as I understand, if you actually want to work directly in the field (not academia), it didn't matter too much after you have some job experience or are licensed. level 1 Graduated from UM. I asked our executive director whether graduating from UM made a difference in hiring me and she said it was my experiment and charming personality that had more to do with it than the school. level 1 I went to a very prestigious program and it's definitely given me an edge. I had a great placement and everyone knows the school I went to is practically an Ivy. It impresses people. level 2 Has it given you better job opportunities relative to peers at less prestigious programs with similar placements?

Online programs will have you do your field where you live, but you should inquire about how it works. Ask if someone visits you in the field, whether you have to come to campus, and what the live meeting requirements are like. Call and talk to people before you apply.

Seems like everywhere I look on this sub and others or in other groups on social media I see people wanting to get their masters degrees for social work or other professions like marriage and family therapy or counseling psych online. I realize many people have good reason for this be it that they are located somewhere that they cannot attend a physical campus reasonably. Maybe they have children at home they have to raise and this takes up all their time. Maybe they have to work multiple jobs and simply do not have the time to drive to a school to sit in lectures. Maybe some just prefer doing school from home, and that I can get, but sometimes when it seems too good to be true, it is, and I think many online programs for what they have to offer are often, too good to be true and may even be a big mistake. From the top, reputation. If you ask me, and based on most people I've asked, if they would prefer an intern or a hire who went through a traditional MSW program versus an online program so far, everyone I've talked to has said they would prefer a person who went through the traditional program experience.

(By the way, I did my MSW at a university that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in the USA, so according to, I should be qualified to work in Canada. I should also qualify for a temporary work permit because I have lived together with my boyfriend for over a year, so I have heard that Canada regards that as being in a "common law" relationship, which enables me to apply to work in Canada as long as his work permit is valid. )
CSWI Master's degree from a CSWE accredited program to practice social work. For CSWI licensure: (Coursework) Complete 24 semester hours or 32 quarter hours in theory of human behavior and practice methods as courses in clinically oriented services, including a minimum of one course in psychopathology. Courses not considered to be clinically oriented are: policy, administration, organization and communities. (Practicum) A supervised field placement that was part of the applicant's master's program, during which the applicant provided clinical services directly to clients.
